Efficient 100g / 400g optical transmission scheme for ultra large scale data center
The traffic of global network data center has been growing rapidly for ten years, and there is no sign of any weakening in the foreseeable future. Smartphones and other mobile devices, social media and applications, streaming media video, augmented reality and virtual reality are becoming increasingly popular. The rapid growth is attracting more and more new users. The number of devices held by each user keeps increasing, and the data used by each device is also rising. Thus, the traffic of data center has been significantly improved. Analysts predict that by 2020, the number of devices connected to the Internet will reach 200billion. Recent evidence suggests that the gradual move towards a mature consumer electronics market may be just a part of the iceberg. The growth rate of data bandwidth in cloud computing and machine to machine deployment is faster than the data communication rate of consumers, which promotes the huge demand for large capacity data center infrastructure.

The current generation of 100g optical transmission module is based on 4-channel optical transmitter and optical receiver, which run in parallel at 25gbps speed respectively, so as to achieve 100 Gbps aggregate bandwidth. At present, there are two types of 100g optical transmission system: for users who want to deploy more optical fibers and reduce the cost of each optical transmission system, psm-4 (parallel single mode-4) optical transmission system is suitable.
The transition from 100g / 400g to 100g pam-4 technology is coming
The characteristic of very large-scale data center is that the speed of interconnection and transition is faster, which often occurs every three years. The innovative 100g interconnection system is becoming the mainstream. It has been widely deployed in the past two years, and the next speed transition is approaching. Although 200 Gbps is currently under consideration, the consensus in the industry is that 400 Gbps will be the natural choice for the next step.
At present, the packaging process of 100g technology based on 4x25g is too complex and cannot be extended to 400g. In order to reduce the cost of 100g and support 400g optical elements economically, the industry is turning to adopt a new technology, using pam-4 (4-stage pulse amplitude modulation) coded optical elements under 50 gbaud, so as to achieve 100g per channel speed, and then achieve 400g speed through 4x100g aggregation. With the development of digital signal processing and high-speed optoelectronic devices such as high-speed silicon photonics, we expect that the industry will soon adopt and implement such technologies.
