This paper introduces the multimode optical fiber jumper and its selection
OM is the abbreviation of optical multi-mode, translated as optical multi-mode, which means the grade standard of multi-mode optical fiber. Due to the difference of core diameter, transmission speed and distance, it is divided into om1, om2, OM3 and OM4. What is the multimode optical fiber jumper and the selection method are introduced below.
1、 Differences of om1, om2, OM3 and OM4 optical fiber jumpers
1. The parameters are different
(1) Om1 refers to 850 / 1300nm full injection bandwidth of 200 / 500 MHz.km More than 50um or 62.5um core diameter multimode fiber;
(2) Om2 refers to 850 / 1300nm full injection bandwidth of 500 / 500 MHz.km More than 50um or 62.5um core diameter multimode fiber;
(3) OM3 is a 50um core diameter multimode fiber optimized by 850nm laser. In 10Gb / s Ethernet with 850nm VCSEL, the fiber transmission distance can reach 300m;
(4) OM4 is an upgraded version of multi-mode optical OM3 fiber, and the optical fiber transmission distance can reach 550m.
2. Different uses
Om1 and om2 have been widely deployed in building applications for many years, supporting the maximum value of 1GB Ethernet transmission;
OM3 and OM4 optical cables are usually used in the cabling environment of data center, supporting 10g or even 40 / 100g high-speed Ethernet transmission.
3. Different fiber designs
Om1 and om2 are based on LED (light emitting diode) for transmission, while OM3 and OM4 are suitable for both led and LD (laser diode) for transmission.
4. The difference of transmission speed and bandwidth
The transmission speed and bandwidth of OM optical fiber jumper increase step by step, om1 < om2 < OM3 < OM4
5. Different functions and features
(1) Om1: larger core diameter and numerical aperture, stronger light collecting ability and bending resistance;
(2) Om2: the core diameter and numerical aperture are relatively small, which effectively reduces the mode dispersion of multimode fiber, significantly increases the bandwidth and reduces the fabrication cost by 1 / 3;
(3) OM3: flame retardant skin is used to prevent flame spread, smoke, acid gas and toxic gas emission, and meet the needs of 10Gb / s transmission rate;
(4) OM4: developed for vscel laser transmission, its effective bandwidth is more than twice that of OM3.
After we understand the differences of different multimode fiber jumpers, we will give you some tips on choosing jumpers.
1. Select the correct connector. The connector of optical fiber jumper has LC / SC / St / FC / MPO / MTP. If the interfaces at both ends of the equipment are the same, we can use LC-LC / SC-SC / mpo-mpo. If the interfaces at both ends of the equipment are different, we can use LC-SC / lc-st / lc-fc.
2. Choose single mode or multi mode. Single mode is mainly used for long-distance transmission, and multi-mode is mainly used for short-distance transmission. Generally, the color of single-mode jumper is yellow, and that of multi-mode jumper is orange, lake blue and purple.
3. Choose single fiber or dual fiber. The single fiber jumper has only one line, which is connected by bi-directional (bidi) optical module. The double fiber jumper is two jumpers side by side, which are connected by ordinary optical module.
4. Select the length of the jumper. The length of optical fiber jumper is generally 0.5m ~ 50m, which mainly depends on the distance between equipment.
